Database Administrator (DBA)

Position Overview
The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the management, performance, security, and reliability of database systems in a dynamic software company environment. This role involves maintaining database operations to ensure optimal performance and uptime, as well as collaborating with development and operations teams to support the organization’s data-driven applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
• Database Administration
o Install, configure, and maintain database systems, including relational (e.g., SQL Server) and non-relational databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
o Manage database storage, performance tuning, and query optimization to ensure efficient operation.
• Performance and Monitoring
o Monitor database health, availability, and performance using tools.
o Identify and resolve database-related issues, minimizing downtime/disruption.
• Backup and Recovery
o Implement and manage robust backup and recovery procedures to protect against data loss.
o Develop and test disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity.
• Security and Compliance
o Enforce database security best practices, including user access control and data encryption.
o Ensure databases comply with organizational and regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR, SOC 2, HIPAA).
• Collaboration and Support
o Work closely with development teams to optimize database queries and schema designs.
o Provide database support during software development, testing, and deployment.
• DevOps and Automation
o Leverage tools and practices to automate database deployment pipelines.
o Collaborate on the design and implementation of CI/CD pipelines that include database updates and migrations.
• Upgrades and Maintenance
o Plan and execute database upgrades, patches, and migrations to maintain compatibility and performance.
o Evaluate and implement technologies to improve efficiency and scalability.
• Documentation
o Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, procedures, and policies.
o Create and update database runbooks to support incident resolution and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
• Required
o Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
o Proven experience as a Database Administrator or in a similar role.
o Experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting.
o Experience with non-relational databases (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB).
o Familiarity with cloud-based database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
o Proficiency with database monitoring and administration tools.
o Knowledge of scripting and automation tools (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
o Strong knowledge of database security and compliance best practices.
o Familiarity with database backup and recovery tools and techniques.
o Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
o Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
o Effective communication and collaboration skills to work across teams.
o Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
• Preferred
o Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA).
o Certification in database management (e.g., Oracle DBA, Microsoft SQL Server, AWS Certified Database Specialist).
